Mushroom Neutrals — The Unsung Heroes of Luxury Interiors

Mushroom neutrals: are they the latest colour trend in Luxury Interiors, or have they always been the best-kept secret of High End Interior Design? At our Interior Design Studio London, we’ve been embracing these beautifully understated tones for years — and it’s about time they received the recognition they deserve.

These earthy, warm shades have quietly grounded many of the spaces we have had the pleasure of working with, but lately, we have noticed that they’re really stepping into the limelight. With a little boost in saturation and richness, mushroom hues are no longer content to whisper from the background. Now, they’re making statements when paired with deeper tan or decadent chocolate tones — a trend within a trend that perfectly suits layered, contemporary schemes.

Why are mushroom neutrals suddenly replacing cool greys across the design landscape? The answer lies in their natural warmth and versatility. These tones create a welcoming base that complements almost any accent colour — with the possible exception of bright yellow, which sits a little too close on the spectrum. Rooted in nature, they bring a grounding calm to interiors — a much-needed sense of comfort in uncertain times.

Personally, growing up in Africa, I’ve always been drawn to earthy, tactile palettes. In our London projects, where winter can stretch seemingly endlessly across the year, these hues infuse positive energy and warmth without overwhelming a space in summer. Balance is everything — and one colour I return to time and again is Joas White by Farrow & Ball. Its delicate warmth pairs effortlessly with Pointing, another favourite, delivering a gentle contrast that feels timeless yet sophisticated and importantly – contemporary.

Mushroom neutrals also provide the perfect foundation for the luxurious materials we adore — think linens, natural leathers, limestone, and alabaster. These pairings create interiors that feel both grounded and refined, a hallmark of our approach to High End Interior Design.

As nature-inspired palettes continue to shape forward-thinking Luxury Interiors, it’s clear that mushroom tones will stay centre stage for years to come. Quietly confident, endlessly adaptable, and beautifully warming — they may have been an industry secret once, but not anymore.
