Designing London Homes That Work Harder: Interior Design Ideas for Period and Contemporary Spaces

In a city as architecturally rich and varied as London, no two homes are quite alike. From elegant Victorian terraces, Georgian townhouses, Arts and Craft Mews homes and every other character style period property there is, to revamped warehouse conversions and sculpted modern apartments; every property has its own quirky character and unique set of challenges. Creating spaces that not only look exquisite but function beautifully, takes thoughtful planning, and that’s where expert design makes all the difference.

At our Interior Design Studio London, we specialise in crafting Luxury Interiors that balance heritage charm with contemporary convenience, ensuring each space works hard to support modern living.

We will soon be celebrating 20 years of delivering luxurious residences, so the few tips we are sharing here are just the tip of the iceberg in what we bring to one of our projects, but a useful start at least, and enough to wet your appetite, I hope.

1. Cabinetry that addresses form and function.

In High End Interior Design, cabinetry is far more than straight forward storage. This is just one of its many roles in a sophisticated repertoire of capabilities. We use cabinetry in our projects to hide a multitude of sins (unsightly pipe work, structural supports no one wants to see, it can also help to claim spaces, direct people flow and a whole list of other smart accolades!)

London properties often demand clever solutions that maximise space while maintaining architectural flow. In period houses, bespoke joinery can connect rooms that have evolved through decades of alteration, creating visual harmony and seamless continuity. In modern apartments, built-in cabinetry keeps open-plan living calm and cohesive, concealing life’s necessities while showcasing craftsmanship. When designed thoughtfully, cabinetry silently supports everyday living whilst furthering the character of the room.

2. Using mirrors to expand space and bestow elegance

London homes, however charming, can often feel compact or light-limited. Mirrors are one of the most transformative tools in our design palette — especially in slender hallways, basement kitchens, or cosy front rooms. By bouncing light across surfaces and extending sightlines, mirrors bring instant spaciousness. In contemporary settings, we often use expansive mirrored panels to reflect skyline views and amplify architectural lines. Whether ornate or minimalist, the right mirror placement changes space perception, altering scale, balance, and brightness. A simple tool really when you think about it, with a lot of give.

3. Using smart home technology to facilitate modern living

Modern Luxury Interiors don’t just need to look beautiful, they can be intuitively responsive too. Smart home technology allows us to design spaces that offer ease of use, efficiency, and elegance in equal measure, and as you like it. App-controlled heating, lighting, and shading can adapt automatically to daily routines, reducing energy use while enhancing comfort. Imagine walking into your home as ambient lights rise gently and warmth welcomes you; all calibrated precisely to your preferences. This kind of quiet intelligence defines High End Interior Design, where it is possible for sustainability and sophistication to go hand in hand.

Our experience of this is that it needs careful planning, and collaboration with the client to get the best results, because the desired outcomes are so personal, and can change drastically from one client to the next. The common thread between all projects however, is that it needs to be hidden. And so that is why for seamless results it’s always better to get going at the front end of a project, so that it forms part of our project thinking, and it doesn’t become an add on. It’s an exciting area for residential interiors and we have worked with it effectively in both period and contemporary spaces.

4. Bringing it all together

London homes tell stories of eras, craftsmanship, and evolving lifestyles. Our design philosophy is about listening closely to those stories and rewriting them for today’s demands without losing their essence. By combining intelligent cabinetry, light reflection,  elegant integration of smart technology and every other element of the Interior Designers tool box sympathetically, we create interiors that are as practical as they are elegant and characterful for period and contemporary homes throughout our beautiful Capital city, London.

At our Interior Design Studio London, we believe that true luxury lies in the seamless fusion of beauty and function, where every detail serves a purpose and every space feels as if it was just meant to be. Whether updating a heritage terrace or perfecting a new build contemporary apartment, our role is to design London homes that not only look spectacular, but live beautifully too.

So if you have a London home that could do with some special attention, why not give us a call, or drop us a line. We would be delighted to roll up our sleeves!
