Russell takes extended trips abroad to photograph wildlife not seen in the UK. He has a deep affinity for the polar region, where he captures powerful moments in challenging environments. His striking image of a gull facing off with an Arctic fox in Norway was featured in The Telegraph a few years ago. More recently, The Times published his beautifully timed photograph of two polar bears play-fighting in Canada. He notes, “This is a time of year when Polar Bears tolerate each other’s company—possibly to avoid conflict later in the season when life becomes more serious.”
His images are the result of hours of patient dedication, often in extreme temperatures and difficult low light. Growing up in Africa myself, and spoiled with more safari trips than I could count, I know how difficult it is to achieve what Russell does with a camera lens. There’s almost no need to go on Safari if you have one of Millner’s images to take in throughout the day. Technical dexterity in the arts of photography and print, coupled with a deep passion for nature are a winning combination here.
