Susannah Weiland

Hand Embroidery Artist

Susannah Weiland is a hand embroidery artist living and working in Richmond upon Thames. She is inspired by the colours and textures of the natural world and creates hand embroidered wall art in two different styles – figurative and abstract – with nature the common thread. In her figurative work she combines tonal pencil drawing with delicate hand embroidery. She stitches into leather to create her abstract artworks, each piece she creates is unique.

Showcased Work

Susannah is something of a marvel because what she does, so finely, is rich in pedigree and is one of the key building blocks of Interior Design. Susannah, has the ability to use thread to tell the most delicate of stories in a way that no other medium can. With thread her creations come alive and sparkle with life. Unsurprisingly she is also an immensely talented draftswoman and is pretty natty with a camera in hand too. Working from her studio, she documents nature scenes richly with thread, pencil and photography.

The artist says, ‘For me, creating is more than a practice — it’s my happy place. The act of drawing and stitching is both meditative and energising. I am passionate about learning new techniques, working across different scales, and crafting art that feels magical and alive.’

Susannah began her formal training in Art & Design on a foundation course before advancing to Nottingham Trent University, where she earned a degree in Graphic Design. For 23 years she pursued a career in the fashion industry as a graphic and textile designer, whilst developing her practice.
