Tess Chodan

Artist and Entomologist

Coming across Tess at the Surrey art show I was transfixed by her beautiful creations for the longest of time. As a creator of artwork featuring insects, her pieces are simply stunning creations, sensitively and thoughtfully constructed and the effect is one of pure delight. I dare you not to be enchanted!

Tess creates artworks using antique insect specimens from historical collections: Butterflies, moths, beetles, dragonflies – and bees, whose delicate wings I gild.  Her work celebrates the tradition of collecting, reflects on memory and preservation, fragility and time, and is inspired by the fleeting lives of the natural world. Many of her specimens are over a hundred years old.

Showcased Work

As a creator of artwork featuring insects, Tess says, ‘I am passionate about connecting my audience with the extraordinary beauty of these ephemeral creatures, in turn leading to a continuing conversation about ecological preservation. My artform reflects on preserving the past – tiny pieces of history that would otherwise be long forgotten or turned to dust. I am looking to contract the fragility of these ephemeral creatures with the ruggedness of industrial, utilitarian or scientific objects..’

All the specimens that Tess’ uses are strictly non-endangered and sustainably-sourced. All her works are unique, numbered and certified.
