Karen Welsh

Abstract Painter

Karen is an abstract painter whose work is deeply inspired by the sweeping chalk hills and wide, open valleys of Wiltshire. This distinctive landscape—with its hardy grasslands and the occasional tree punctuating the horizon—evokes a strong sense of space, stillness, and freedom. The clean line between earth and sky, and the feeling of being “on top of the world,” are recurring themes in her work.

Karen works primarily in acrylics, often using a limited colour palette to maintain freshness and clarity. She prefers large, flat brushes to create bold, gestural marks, giving her paintings a loose, painterly quality that feels instinctive and expressive.

Showcased Work

Her artistic journey has moved steadily from figurative work to semi-abstract and now to pure abstraction. Each painting begins with gestural mark-making, followed by the layering of paint to build depth and emotion. A strong emphasis is placed on tonal balance and colour harmony as she intuitively develops each piece to its final form.

Karen says, ‘I think of my artworks, past and present, as an unfinished diary of my personal reaction to the landscape around me. Moving gradually from representation to abstraction, the shapes and colours I once painted as I saw them are now painted as I feel them.

Karen’s abstract landscapes invite the viewer to connect with a sense of place and feeling, offering open-ended interpretations rooted in moment, memory, and emotion.
