HAMPTON COURT PALACE OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON

Right on our doorstep, this 500 year old collection of historical buildings boasts a stupefying history. Just architecturally its span is impressive, starting with the original Tudor Hampton Court Palace, begun by Cardinal Wolsey in the early 16th century. It’s splendour soon attracted the interest of Henry VIII, who brought all his six wives here. This is probably the most talked about event even to this day. However, surrounded by gorgeous gardens and famous features such as the Maze and the Great Vine, the palace continues to entertain visitors from far and wide. On the East side of the palace stands the newer English Baroque section commissioned by William III and Mary II (1689-1702). This elegant Sir Christopher Wren achievement is well worth a walk past at any time of the year. It was Queen Victoria who opened the palace to the public in 1838. It remains a magnet for millions of visitors, drawn to its great history, its ghosts and its fabulous art collection.
