5 good reasons to work with a local interior designer

There are many good reasons to work with a local Interior Designer, and in this article I will set them out for you. Before that, however, let me set the scene. We are based in East Molesey, Surrey and have clients in Putney, Barnes, Twickenham, Richmond, Teddington, East Molesey, Thames Ditton, New Malden, Claygate, Cobham and Esher; and now further afield too. From the outset it was important for me not to be doing hours of unnecessary travel. Luckily, it was also obvious that there were plenty of local families, couples and individuals who could benefit from our services. As a result we made it our focus to serve our local community, and so I have seen first hand the advantages of proximity. Our closest large landmark is Hampton Court Palace.
1. The benefits of Local recommendations
When you are appointing your project team for your new build or period property renovation or extension it’s important that you check out your team thoroughly. Be sure to follow up with the recommendations that you are given or garner from the Interior Designers website. If you source your Interior Designer local to yourself, you may even know some of the referees provided, which would allow you to follow up with a conversation. Failing that you could look on local chat groups, or ask around. Chances are you would be rewarded. It is critically important that you find a fit that you are comfortable with, because with these style projects there is a lot of ground to cover and you will need to get along well.
2. Working with a local interior designer means LOCAL SOURCING
Working with an Interior Designer local to you means that you will have more time for the important stuff. This is because through the course of the project you may need to visit showrooms, or visit examples of the Interior Designers previous work. This will be so much better for you from a time management point of view if these visits are kept local. Of course, it’s not always possible, because sometimes suppliers are not local, but the answer to this is to ensure that you have an Interior Designer that you can entrust with these decisions if you don’t have the time to travel. Sourcing locally, also means that you will be supporting local, and that always has to be a good thing.
3. Working with a local interior Designer means reduced carbon footprint
Face to face meetings are invaluable, especially at the beginning of a project, so working locally means there is less travel time to meetings for everyone involved. It is true that zoom has served us all well during this lock-down period, and will continue to do so, but when you are at the specification stage of a project it is really important to touch, feel and see samples of the materials that you will I’ve with for a very long time. It is also important to build up a solid working relationship at the front end of the project, and this is far easier in person. By getting to know our clients we can be more confident with the recommendations that we make too. To facilitate this we tend to offer working lunches, because often our clients are short on time, and this gives us more time to ‘journey’ together.
When the project really gets going it means that you will have a local team close at hand, so you can feel confident that your impact on the environment will be minimised in this way.
4. Having your interior designer close at hand ensures project management efficiency
When your project is full steam ahead, you will need someone to project manage to make sure everything flows smoothly. We frequently take on this role, and in fact prefer to, because it means that we can keep a close eye on progress and finish quality. If your Interior Designers are local to your site then you are more likely to benefit from more frequent ‘quality control’ visits.
Here’s something for you to think about – I have never had an unnecessary site visit, and at some points in a project it is necessary to visit daily. This can make a real difference to the overall efficiencies of the project, and also to the end results.
5. LOCAL REPUTATION COUNTS
This doesn’t apply to us, because we would always strive to deliver a stellar job, no matter the proximity to the project. It may, however, offer you some piece of mind to think that no-one wants to ruin their local reputation by delivering a bad job. There is more at stake for things to go extremely well, perhaps. That’s a happy place to be.

A little aside….Last year we won the Best Luxury Interior 2020 from the Build Real Estate and Property Awards. This was a wonderful accolade for our company to receive. 2020 was a very busy year for us with little time to reflect on the import of this award, and 2021 is no different, but I wanted to take some time to reflect on what this has and does mean for us. Primarily it is a wonderful recognition that we are doing what we set out to do; to be recognised as the Best Luxury Interior Design Agency in the South East England. We will continue to build on this in 2021 and beyond, seeking wider recognition as we do within the industry itself and the wider public. Awards like this matter because they give the team behind the award the recognition they deserve for their brilliant efforts and dedication. This award extends too to all our marvellous suppliers that help to deliver the perfect finish on all the projects we work on and in our efforts towards the attainment of Luxury Interior Design.
